7:30 a.m.: I woke up this AM and first checked my notifications on my iPhone. I have morning news pushed from the WaPo, NYT, WSJ, AZ Central and LA Times. Often times, the news organizations will all send the top headlines of the morning and many can be redundent as they’re dispatching storeis from the AP, so they all get the same top stories trending. I also will check Twitter, my e-mail, any new texts, and make coffee often while doing all of this as well. I subscribe to a lot of political outlets on Twitter on the right and the left, to see what both sides are saying. I’ll many times see misinformation coming from the right-leaning or far right pages that I follow. I saw a post from a far-right poster called Laura Loomer and it was DEFINITELY Disinformation. She was positing in her post that Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar is “pro-Hamas” which she clearly is NOT. She’s a current sitting member of Congress and is NOT in favor of a terrorist group in Gaza.
8:00 am: I turned on my TV to watch Morning Joe on MSNBC that I recorded from earlier in the AM as it’s on from I believe 3AM-6AM(PST). It’s live on the east coast from 6-9AM(EST). I had my coffee and watched the first hour of the show which they discussed former President Trump’s perpetual legal woes among other hot topics I find the show to be very informative and topical on the the day’s top stories leading the news day and void of misinformation.
10:00 a.m.: I head to the gym at this time as my ASU classes are remote this semester (Spring 2024) and can make my own study schedule. I listened to Spotify at the gym for music and podcasts. I did hear the breaking news about Russia and their terror bombing last night, and I turned on the NBC news app on my phone to listen LIVE to the breaking story. I rarely hear any mis/disinformation from NBC. It’s reputation as a credible news outlet is too important for them to allow that, I think.
2:00 p.m..: I went on a walk outside as it was so nice out today here in Phoenix. I checked my Twitter and agian I did notice some misinformation posts from the far-right media. One that stood out was from a far-right media personality called Chaya Raichik who posted that DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusiuon) is “code for less whites”. Which any sane person knows that is completely disinformation.
Raichik is the founder of far-right group “Libs of TikTok” which has also recently been in the news for spreading mis and disinformation about trans students and LGBTQ teachers in Oklahoma. “She called adults who teach children about LGBTQ+ identities “abusive,” asserted that being gender-nonconforming is a “mental illness” and referred to schools as “government-run indoctrination camps” for the LGBTQ+ community” (Washington Post).
6:00 p.m.: I listen to KJZZ, Phoenix’s NPR station in the early evenings. I like to get the top of the hour evening news and then the podcast shows Marketplace and Fresh Air that follow. I use the NPR ONE app specifcially. I also perused the other shows and podcasts on offer for the day in the app is it’s really a fountain and wealth of information. It’s truly a national treasure, NPR. They also have an impeccable reputation in the industry so I’ve never heard misinforamtion from them.
8:00 p.m.: I like to watch MSNBC at night and will watch programs that I record from Joy Reid, Alex Wagner, Chris Hayes and Laurence O’Donnell as well as The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle which I’ll watch live at 8pm(PST). They all keep me up to date on the biggest stories of the day, and they’re VERY entertaining as well with an array of experts and guests on each show. They MANY times will touch on misinformation in the news that’s on former President Trump’s “social media” site “Truth Social” as well as disinformation being spread on Twitter and Far Right media like OAN and NewsMax.
I am kind of a news junkie as you can see from my diary. The most credible media sources for me are the NBC News family of networks (NBC, CNBC, MSNBC and their digital platforms) and NPR as well as PBS. These platforms have hardly, if any, misinformation or disinformation. They’re WELL established media brands and have repuations. I find it rich that the right-wing FOX News for example thinks it’s in the same ballpark as NBC, when theyre currently paying a 3/4 of billion dollar judgment to Dominion voting machines FOR DELIBERATLY SPREADING misinformation about the 2020 election.
So I do find NBC, NPR and PBS to be the most correct, fact-filled, impartial and straight forward news organizations.
